How to care for your home awning

Whilst all of our retractable awnings are manufactured to the highest standards and will look wonderful for many years, we often get asked by customers what are the best ways to clean and care for their awning to keep it looking fresh and new.
We have put this simple guide together with our top tips to keep your house awning looking its very best.
How do I clean my awning?
All fabrics used on our awnings and pergola awnings are coated with a Teflon or similar coating, making them both shower and dirt repellent. However, over time and with regular use dust and grime can gather on the fabric and frame therefore you may wish to give your awning a freshen up.
- Add a small amount of washing up liquid, say 2-3 drops, to a bucket of warm water.
- Use a sponge or cloth to wipe down the awning frame and gently clean the fabric with a soft brush dipped into the water solution. If the awning is really dirty, we can recommend professional awning cleaning products. Never vigorously scrub or use any harsh chemicals or bleaches when cleaning your awning as these will harm the fabric and coating.
- Rinse off the soapy water with clean water and allow to dry naturally
- Ensure the awning is completely dry before retracting it back into its unit. Any water trapped within the rolled fabric or bracket can cause mildew to form, we suggest it’s best to pick a warm dry day to clean your awning so it can dry properly.

How often do I need to clean my awning?
To ensure your awning is looking it’s best for your own enjoyment, we recommend cleaning it bi-annually. We would suggest cleaning early spring and early autumn on a warm and dry day. This will prepare you awning for Summer use and Winter storage. The spring / summer months are when your awning will be used the most and so we also recommend regular rinses with clean water to remove any dust or garden debris such as blossom or leaves from gathering on the canopy. Simply hosing the fabric down each month will make your end of season clean a lot easier too.
At The Terrace Room Company, we only offer the finest quality home garden shading products which require very little maintenance. By following these simple cleaning steps you’ll ensure your patio awning will be looking its best for years to come.

These cleaning tips apply to our full Awning range, Pergola awnings, Plaza Viva retractable roof model, vertical VertiTex and Valance Plus vertical blinds, side Paravento Awning along with the WGM Top Awning for the glass rooms.
